Biography

Amita Avadhani, Ph.D., DNP, NEA-BC, CNE, DCC, ACNP-BC, NP-C, CCRN, FAANP, FCCM, FNAP is a Professor and Chair of the nursing department at Temple University College of Public Health. She is a David R. Devereaux Endowed Chair of Nursing. Dr. Avadhani is a Certified Nurse Educator and Nurse Executive with extensive academic, clinical, and leadership experience. Before her appointment at Temple University, she served as a Professor and Director of the Post Master’s Doctor of Nursing Practice-Executive Model as well as the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner programs at Rutgers University School of Nursing in Newark.

Dr. Avadhani’s educational preparation includes a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Psychology, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and a Master of Science Nursing degree. She is nationally certified as a Nurse Executive-Advanced (NEA-BC), Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP-BC), an Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (NP-C), a Diplomate of Comprehensive Care (DCC), Critical Care RN (CCRN) as well as a graduate of American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Diversity Leadership Institute. She has earned many state and national awards including the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Nurse Practitioner Advocate Award for 2021, the New Jersey Institute for Nursing Diva Award for 2022, and CARES Award-Honorable Mention for 2023. Her research and scholarship include quality of work-life, workforce issues, mentorship, and infection prevention. In addition to serving on the editorial board of Journal of the JDNP, she also serves as a reviewer for the Nursing Economics journal as well.

Dr. Avadhani has diverse international nursing experience in India, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and the United States. Her expertise includes teaching, curriculum development, leadership, accreditation, academic clinical partnerships, scholarship, and service. She has a track record of leading and managing projects successfully. She has an established regional and national reputation as a nurse leader through her work with professional organizations. Her current professional organizational leadership positions include SIGMA North America Region-14 coordinator and AACN Nominations Committee member, and Pennsylvania Higher Education in Nursing Schools Association (PHENSA) Treasurer. Some of her previous noteworthy national leadership contributions include her service as a governing board member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners as the Region-2 Director, Chairperson of the Society of Critical Care Medicine Advance Practice Nurse-Professional Development Committee, and past Chairperson of the New Jersey-Lung Association Leadership Board. Owing to her accomplishments as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Educator, and healthcare leader, she has received national recognition through her fellowships in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP), the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM), and the National Academies of Practice (FNAP).
