Biography

Julia M. Kobulsky, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Social Work at Temple University. The overarching goal of her scholarship is to improve the health and well-being of children and families through the prevention of child maltreatment and the amelioration of its effects. Through her scholarship, Dr. Kobulsky strives to inform interventions and improve the effectiveness and equity of child welfare services and systems in meeting the needs of children and families.

Dr. Kobulsky is principal investigator of a project entitled “A new foundation: Advancing adolescent neglect science through measurement development” (NICHD: 1R21HD112729-01A1). This project involves the inductive development and initial validation of a youth self-report measure of adolescent neglect. This will be the first measure of adolescent neglect to adopt a child-centered definition, focusing on critical unmet adolescent needs rather than caregiving to better acknowledge the multilevel contributors to neglect.

In addition, she is principal investigator on a NICHD R01 (1R01HD114586-01A1) entitled “Never again: Advancing the prevention of recurrent child sexual abuse.” In partnership with the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance and the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, this community engaged research project seeks to improve the system’s capacity to prevent child sexual abuse recurrence. It involves the development of a unique dataset, geospatial and other quantitative analysis of the dataset to shed light on the etiology of child sexual abuse recurrence, and qualitative interviews to build theory on child sexual abuse recurrence and conceptualize preventative interventions to embed within child welfare systems.
