Jason Wingard, former dean of Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies, will become Temple University's 12th president, the university announced Tuesday.

Temple University on Tuesday tapped a Philadelphia resident whose career has straddled both business and academia, with previous leadership appointments at two Ivy League universities and Stanford, as its next president.

"To say that it works right now would be a lie," said Dr. Aroonsiri Sangarlangkarn, a geriatrician and an assistant professor of medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Temple University has selected its next president. In a historic decision, Temple said Tuesday that Dr. Jason Wingard, former dean and professor of the School of Professional Studies at Columbia University, will be the 12th president of the university.

Temple University has appointed the school’s first Black president in its 137-year history. Jason Wingard will begin his term on July 1, following the departure of Richard M. Englert, who has served as president since 2016.
