Landscape Architecture Major

Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture

Integrate art, culture, ecology and horticulture to design and build outdoor spaces with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture in Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Graduates of this four-year, 124-credit, professionally accredited undergraduate program are prepared to pursue licensure as a landscape architect and enter the landscape architecture profession as skilled designers and responsible stewards of the environment working to create and enhance landscapes for human communities that support natural systems.

You’ll explore a broad range of current topics in sustainable land use planning and design and engage in timely, global topics such as land and biodiversity conservation, climate change, and social justice. Students are guided by a faculty of design practitioners and innovators committed to one-on-one mentorship and have access to top-notch resources at Temple, including hands-on learning and research at Temple’s suburban Ambler Campus, home to the 187-acre Ambler Arboretum, greenhouses, gardens, labs, design studios and technology centers.

The Landscape Architecture BS curriculum is structured around sustainable design studios and horticulture courses and is supplemented by coursework in site engineering, construction technology, landscape history and theory and professional practice. Students gain skills in research, writing, and visual representation, including drawing, drafting, model-making and digital processes. A major focus of the third year in the program is collaborative design-build experience.  Some required courses are available only at Temple University Main campus while other major course requirements are only available at Temple University Ambler.

Graduate Pathways  

Students in the Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture program may choose to continue into Tyler’s Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board-accredited Master of Landscape Architecture degree program—one of the few national programs to emphasize ecological landscape restoration.

Classes & Curriculum  

As a BS in Landscape Architecture student, you’ll develop knowledge in landscape history and theory, engineering and construction technology, and professional practice skills while studying the diverse ecology of Philadelphia and the surrounding region. A few courses you can anticipate taking include 

  • Introduction to Green Careers in Landscape Architecture, 

  • Landscape Architecture Design Studio I-VI, 

  • Landscape Traditions and

  • Planting Design.

Minors 

Landscape Architecture majors can expand on their coursework with a variety of minors that deepen their understanding of the relationship between ecological planning and preservation, the natural landscape, and the human-made environment and protection of landscape resources.

Undergraduate Certificates  

The Undergraduate Certificate in Environmental Sustainability allows students at Temple University to enhance their major with focused coursework on environmental sustainability. This certificate provides students with an interdisciplinary perspective that draws from the fields of botany, city planning, community development, horticulture and landscape architecture. Students will gain basic knowledge needed to evaluate environmental problems and to draw environmentally, socially and economically sound solutions.

In keeping with Temple’s commitment to access and affordability, the Bachelor of Science offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support.

Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level (undergraduate or graduate), course load (full- or part-time), in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. You can view the full Cost of Attendance breakdown on the Student Financial Services website.

These tuition costs apply to the 2025–2026 academic year.

Our Advisors

Tyler’s academic advising team offers every Tyler student one-on-one, personal and academic guidance, beginning at Orientation right through to graduation. The academic advisors help you chart your course through your degree program and major, and ensure you are on a clear educational path.

Study Away

Exposure to diverse cultures, environments and mindsets is essential for art, architecture and design students. At Tyler, you are encouraged to broaden your perspective and explore unique environments through study away programs. 

Programs to study in Rome, Tokyo and Venice are offered throughout the year. 

For a half-century, Temple Rome has been a center for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning, where the “Eternal City” is the classroom, the studio and the campus. It offers extensive experiences for art and architecture students, with courses in architecture, art history, drawing, liberal arts, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.  

Temple University Japan offers a Bachelor of Arts in Art with a Digital Media concentration. Students may also take individual digital photography, art history and architecture courses on the Japan campus.
