  • Tailored curriculum: The major’s curriculum is designed to address learning experiences and outcomes specific to the field. It comprises courses in advertising, communication, public relations, production, performance and journalism, as well as a required sports media internship course, Sports Media Learning Experience.

  • Location: Klein College is on Temple’s Main Campus in Philadelphia, the fourth-largest media market in the country and home to professional sports teams including the Eagles, Flyers, Phillies and 76ers. Learning Outcomes

  • Foundational knowledge: You will gain a broad understanding of the sports media industry, including its history. 
  • Inclusion and equity: The curriculum focuses on a critical understanding of equity and inclusion in sports media, such as coverage of women in sports, the intersection of race and religion in sports, the influence of social class, and the coverage of LGBTQIA+ issues and athletes with disabilities in sports. 
  • Communication: Students will gain proficiency in writing and communicating about sports. 
  • Critical analysis: As part of the curriculum, students will develop a portfolio of sports media that spans articles, websites, broadcasting reels of printed articles, multimedia websites, and projects examining the influence and coverage of a variety of sports. 
  • Global perspective: You will form a deep understanding of the differences between sports and the differences in sports coverage across multiple countries and cultures. 
  • Performance skills: Sports broadcasting courses are designed to provide students with experience in presenting fact-based reporting on air with TUTV, Temple Update, OwlSports Update and/or professional internships. 
  • Presentation skills: You will develop strong reporting and presentation skills in broadcasting, print, public relations or advertising. 

Claire Smith Sports Media Center 

Students in the Sports Media program will gain real-world experience in the field through Klein College’s Claire Smith Sports Media Center, a one-of-a-kind, world-class academic center. Named after renowned alum Claire Smith, KLN ’79, the center focuses on the next generation of sports professionals by emphasizing the teaching, training and research of the areas of sports journalism, advertising, public relations and production. Sports Media Summit

Klein College hosts the annual Sports Media Summit. The event features sports celebrity athletes and journalists, and attendees can connect with top leaders in sports media working in Philadelphia and across the country.  

Classes & Curriculum 

The Bachelor of Arts in Sports Media can be completed over four years of continuous study. The curriculum includes sports media foundation and core courses as well as courses specific to each focus area (Sports Media Production and Performance, Sports Communication, and Sports Journalism).
