Architecture Major

Bachelor of Science in Architecture 

Launch your career in architecture through the Bachelor of Science in Architecture in Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Graduates of this 123-credit, professionally accredited undergraduate program receive a pre-professional degree, qualifying them for paid internships in the architectural field or admission to a Master of Architecture program—a requirement for professional registration and a career as a licensed architect. 

Take coursework in architectural design, history and theory of architecture, sustainability and building technology. With guidance from an accomplished faculty of design practitioners and innovators and access to top-notch resources at Temple, you’ll acquire knowledge and skills to engage timely, global topics like health and climate change, social equity and digital design processes.   

Build fundamental skills in design thinking and making through intensive design studios that incorporate information from lecture and seminar courses. Learn to form and communicate unique design ideas through digital processes, drawing and model-making, and explore coursework in related Tyler programs, such as community development, facilities management, historic preservation, horticulture, and landscape architecture. 

Graduate Pathways 

Through Tyler’s 4+1 accelerated track and 4+2 track, students earn both Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Science in Architecture degrees in a sequence that meets the National Architectural Accrediting Board’s standards for an accredited professional education.

Classes & Curriculum  

As a Bachelor of Science in Architecture student, you’ll develop building technology, design and environmental stewardship skills while studying the diverse urban context of Philadelphia. A few courses you can anticipate taking include the following.

  • Visual Literacy for Architecture 

Minors 

Architecture majors can expand on their coursework with a variety of minors that deepen their understanding of the relationship between the natural landscape and the human-made environment, ecological planning and preservation, and protection of landscape resources. Minors include the following.

  • Minor in City and Regional Planning

  • Minor in Community Development

  • Minor in Ecological Planning and Design 

  • Minor in Environmental Horticulture 

  • Minor in Landscape Studies 

  • Minor in Sustainable Food Systems 

Undergraduate Certificates 

The Undergraduate Certificate in Environmental Sustainability allows students at Temple University to enhance their major with focused coursework on environmental sustainability.

This certificate provides students with an interdisciplinary perspective that draws from the fields of botany, city planning, community development, horticulture and landscape architecture. Students will gain basic knowledge needed to evaluate environmental problems and to draw environmentally, socially and economically sound solutions. 

Tuition & Fees

In keeping with Temple’s commitment to access and affordability, the Bachelor of Science in Architecture offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support.

Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level (undergraduate or graduate), course load (full- or part-time), in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. You can view the full Cost of Attendance breakdown on the Student Financial Services website.

These tuition costs apply to the 2025–2026 academic year.

Pennsylvania resident: $24,168.00 per year
Out-of-state: $40,584.00 per year

Our Academic Advisors

Tyler’s academic advising team offers every Tyler student one-on-one, personal and academic guidance, beginning at Orientation right through to graduation. The academic advisors help you chart your course through your degree program and major, and ensure you are on a clear educational path. 

Advisors are available to discuss registration, study abroad and staying on track to graduate, as well as policy and procedures and navigating other available resources across the university.

Study Away

Exposure to diverse cultures, environments and mindsets is essential for art, architecture and design students. At Tyler, you are encouraged to broaden your perspective and explore unique environments through study away programs. 

Programs to study in Rome, Tokyo and Venice are offered throughout the year. 

For a half-century, Temple Rome has been a center for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning, where the “Eternal City” is the classroom, the studio and the campus. It offers extensive experiences for art and architecture students, with courses in architecture, art history, drawing, liberal arts, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.  

Temple University Japan offers a Bachelor of Arts in Art with a Digital Media concentration. Students may also take individual digital photography, art history and architecture courses on the Japan campus.
